When All Is Said and Done

when all is said and done,
the light still goes out
and i am alone with these things

with memories of a Great Dog
who died when still just a pup

i will remember always how he looked
upon me before disease stole his eyes
because he was born deaf
you'd never know because he always followed close
and he watched me with all his being

before disease stole his eyes

when all is said and done
and a new day is on the rise
      i will remember this Great
White Dog with crystal blue eyes

and how he never heard me call his name
but I never had to call him twice . . .

how he never heard me tell him i loved him
yet he loved back triple-fold in his response to me

when all is said and done, i never reached out like
      that before
and no human ever touched me like him
in places of my heart i never thought existed

before disease stole his eyes

i was the world he saw and loved
and when they closed forever
so my forever was closed

no human ever touched me like that

no wonder God wanted him Back . . .
