"We listened for a voice crying in the wilderness.
And we heard the jubilation of wolves."
 - Durward L. Allen

"Wolves may feature in our myths, our history, our dreams,
but they have their own future,
their own loves, their own dreams to fulfill."
 - Anthony Miles, Even Wolves Dream

WHAT DO WOLVES DREAM

What do wolves dream
but to stop the hunger within

to sleep beneath the stars
with both eyes closed

to wake up and find
their mate still beside them
and
the cubs all cozy and safe nearby

what do wolves dream
but to stop the hunger within

to find shelter from the storm
and a carcass of caribou to last
them the Winter

a stream of water to quinch their thirst
fields to run without fear of tresspassing

the land man claimed when he took from them
the land their ancestors knew

what do wolves dream
but to stop the hunger within

us

to eliminate them,

what do wolves dream
but to look in our face
and see a smile without fear or hate

to see their cubs, their land, their mate
all in one piece

what do wolves dream
but to stop the hunger within

to sleep beneath the stars
with both eyes closed

and come the morning, to find everything
there,

what do wolves dream
but to stop the hunger within
 - - so that we all shall hunger no more.
